Blogging With The Elephant: Being A Canadian Blogger On An American Internet
The Internet knows no borders - or does it? Most online networks and communities and the like are US-based or comprised mainly of Americans. BlogHer, the largest women's blogging network, includes hundreds of Canadian blogs, but does not feature Canadian content or promote or follow stories of Canadian interest. Does this matter? Many Canadian bloggers/website owners have large international audiences and don't identify themselves prominently as Canadian - does this suggest that we don't care about Canadian identity online? Does such an identity make a difference in what we write and how we write it, or how we do business? Is one a different kind of tech-blogger or gossip-blogger or mom-blogger if one is blogging from a Canadian perspective? Do we need our own communities and advertising networks and conferences? Or are we all Americans on the Internet?
